Is This the World’s Smartest Travel Adapter?

The TESSAN AERO 70 tries to do it all at once

Travel adapters aren’t exactly known for innovation. Most of us have a chunky universal plug rattling around in a drawer somewhere, and it does the job well enough that we’ve never really thought about upgrading. TESSAN reckons it’s time we did, though, and the AERO 70 is its pitch for what a modern travel adapter should actually look like.

The AERO 70 is an ultra-slim smart travel adapter that crams 70W GaN fast charging, a built-in cable, a real-time smart display, and compatibility with over 200 countries into a form factor that measures just 89 x 50 x 33mm. TESSAN says that’s 40% smaller than a standard adapter, and at 210g it’s light enough to disappear into a jacket pocket or carry-on without complaint.

What sets it apart from the usual travel adapter fare is that smart display. It shows live voltage, wattage, socket current and temperature readings, which is all useful when you’re plugging into an unfamiliar outlet in a country you’ve never visited before. The adapter also monitors for overloads, abnormal temperatures and unsafe conditions, backing that up with a built-in fuse and multi-layer protection covering over-current, over-voltage, short circuits and overheating. It’s rated for 100 to 250V devices up to 2500W, so it should handle everything from laptops to hair dryers.

On the charging front, it supports up to five devices simultaneously. USB-C1 tops out at 70W for laptops and tablets, USB-C2 and USB-C3 each deliver 20W, and there’s a USB-A port at 18W for older accessories. TESSAN is also making a big deal of its proprietary TFFC 2.0 charging technology, which it says is the first travel adapter implementation to support Apple’s AVS (Adaptive Voltage Scaling) protocol. The company claims the system can boost a device’s battery to 50% in just 20 minutes by dynamically optimising power allocation.

The adapter covers US, UK, EU and AU plug types with integrated prongs, and it’s housed in flame-retardant polycarbonate rated at 94V-0 for durability.

The TESSAN AERO 70 is currently live on Kickstarter, with early bird pricing starting at $69 (RRP $129) and £52 (RRP £97) according to the campaign page. The campaign runs until 30th July, with TESSAN expecting to ship to backers in August and a wider retail launch planned for late August.
