Streamlabs Network Boost Turns a Spare Phone into a Bonding Rig for IRL Streamers

Fewer dropped streams for a fraction of the cost of a bonding backpack

IRL streaming’s biggest technical headache has always been the connection. Broadcast from anywhere crowded and a single phone’s cellular signal will drop or throttle, usually at the worst possible moment. The traditional fix has been a hardware bonding rig, a backpack full of modems that stitches several SIM connections together, but that kit typically costs thousands. Streamlabs reckons it’s found a cheaper answer, and it’s one most creators already own the hardware for.

Network Boost, launched for Streamlabs Ultra subscribers, works by turning a second smartphone into a relay device. Instead of buying a bonding backpack, a creator runs the Streamlabs Controller app on that spare phone, which pools its WiFi and cellular connection alongside whatever the primary Streamlabs Mobile broadcast device is using. If one connection weakens or drops out, the feature is designed to lean on whichever link is still healthy, so the stream itself keeps running rather than buffering out.

Citing its own platform data, Streamlabs said Twitch viewers spent 391.6 million hours watching IRL content over the past year, up 84.7 percent year on year. That’s a category growing fast, and connectivity has been the thing standing between more creators and going live from wherever they happen to be. There’s a catch for Android loyalists though. Network Boost is fully supported on iOS, with iPhones able to act as both the primary streaming device and the relay. Android handsets can only take the relay role, meaning the stream still has to be started from an iOS device.

Network Boost arrives alongside Stream Shift, a feature Streamlabs introduced recently that lets a broadcast move between desktop and mobile without ending the stream, so a creator could start at a desk and carry on from a show floor without cutting the feed. Together they read as Streamlabs chasing the same goal from two angles, keeping people live for longer and making it easier to move the broadcast to wherever the creator actually is.
